Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about the electoral college simulator.
A candidate needs 270 electoral votes out of 538 to win the US presidential election. That is a simple majority of the total electoral college.
The electoral college is the body of 538 electors who formally elect the US president. Each state gets electors equal to its congressional delegation (House + Senate), plus 3 for DC.
Currently the tool does not save scenarios between sessions. You can screenshot your map or note the state assignments to recreate a scenario later.
Each state receives electoral votes equal to its number of US House representatives plus its two senators. DC gets 3 votes. California has the most (54) and several states have the minimum (3).
If no candidate reaches 270, the House of Representatives decides the winner, with each state delegation getting one vote. This has happened twice in US history (1800 and 1824).
