Dog Age Calculator
Convert your dog's age to human years using the latest veterinary research. Select your dog's breed size for the most accurate result.
How It Works
Modern veterinary research has transformed how we calculate dog age.
The Science Behind the Formula
Gone is the old 7-year rule. The first year of a dog's life equals about 15 human years. The second year adds 9 more. After that, the rate depends entirely on breed size.
Size Matters
Small breeds age at ~4 human years per dog year after age 2, medium at ~5, large at ~6, and giant breeds at ~7. This explains why small dogs often outlive larger ones.
Life Stages Explained
Puppy/Adolescent: under 2 years. Adult: 2–7 years (prime health). Senior: 7+ years (may need extra veterinary care and lifestyle adjustments).

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about dog age calculation.
The old "1 dog year = 7 human years" rule is a myth. Modern veterinary research shows dogs age much faster in their first two years and then the rate varies significantly by breed size. Small breeds tend to live longer and age slower after maturity, while giant breeds age more quickly.
Breed size significantly impacts how dogs age. After the first two years, small breeds age at about 4 human years per dog year, medium breeds at 5, large breeds at 6, and giant breeds at 7. This is why small dogs often live 15+ years while giant breeds typically live 8–10 years.
This calculator uses formulas based on AVMA guidelines and peer-reviewed veterinary research on aging across different breed sizes. While individual dogs may vary based on genetics, diet, exercise, and healthcare, this provides a much more accurate estimate than the outdated 7-year rule.
